IS THERE SUCH THING AS HALAL NAIL POLISH?

So, as you can see from my title above, that's kinda becoming a rage nowadays among many Muslim sisters, eh? Yep, and if this news haven't hit your shores yet, might as well I tell you.. There's this brand named Inglot, which happens to have a range of "breathable" nail polish which is also said to let water vapor pass through the nail polish and actually touches your nails.

God. When I heard this I was friggin happy!! I mean, I love having colored nails, and all this while I have been religiously applying my henna on my nails just so to keep it red. And yes, I did that cause I was told by my ustazah that applying henna on your nails is in fact a sunnah. InsyaAllah. So yeah.

But, as I've done research, to satisfy my qualms before actually purchasing those nail colors, I have found out that, yes my ladies, Inglot's O2 breathable nail polish is indeed not suitable for a Muslimah to be wearing it on a daily basis throughout the entire month. Let me give you the points on why it is not as what we want to think it is:

  • The act of putting on a nail polish is never haram. Therefore, you cannot call this Inglot nail polish halal. It never was haram in the first place.
  • The Inglot nail polish itself says that they let water VAPOR reach your nails, whilst from the fatwa stated here, says that in order for our wudhu (ablution) to be valid, is where water in LIQUID form flows on every part that is required to be wudhu' upon.
  • In simpler words, when your nail is free from any barrier such as nail polish, 100% of liquid water can touch, flow and wash your nails. But when you put on this so called 'breathable nail polish' on, maybe only about 60% of water vapor touches your nails.
  • Tests have been made, and it is actually proven to be not permeable (Permeable =That can be permeated or penetrated, especially by liquids or gases) as it said it would. One of the tests I saw is from here.

Yeah, as much as I am sad of the results that showed up negative in proving these nail polishes to be deemed suitable for everyday wear for us Muslimahs, I'm afraid I have to remind us all, including me, that this product is indeed a big NO. The product itself was made in the first place to help non-Muslim ladies who put on nail polishes on a regular basis, maintain a healthy and rich in moisture set of nails while having the nail polishes on. Muslimah ladies was not their initial target market. It just so happened that some smart alec just wants to believe that these nail polishes were made for them.

But the other day, me and my sister went to the shop in Midvalley, and actually tried putting the tester nail polish on, just to feel how it stays on. I truly find it lightweight and sort of watery based. Thus making you feel like you're not putting any varnish on and doesn't feel all smother-ey like how other nail polishes do. So if you happen to have your menses that month, by all means, you can wear this nail polish with all your heart's content. haha.. But when you ladies are performing solah, I suggest you skip this beauty regime cause it wouldn't be worth the doubt. Wouldn't it suck, to have you pray all this while with an invalid ablution? Nauzubillah..

"Have you tried Henna? That is allowed. As far as the nail polish is concerned, I guess you can use it, but it would be closer to taqwa to refrain until a more water permeable option is available." - Reveilingyourself.com

You can also read up on it at Suhaib Webb's website. (Flippin cool! "Webb's website"..haha.. ok somebody slap me!) I hope this post have helped you girls in any way possible, and if you have any additional info on this, do share in the comment box below! :D

Hi sis Shea ^_^

Thanks for the very valuable info! I've heard about this before but i'm not sure if muslimahs can really wear it.
About other nail polish, i'd suggest other muslimah for not wearing it although in 'period'. It's not about the solah but if u are wearing it and suddenly Allah stated that we die at that moment, the nail polish will be so hard to be removed. and there are cases that they need to pull of the nail from the finger :/
It is sure a pain!
I'm just sharing what i know. Hope it helps! :B

Well, yeah, the only time to wear nail polish is when you have period :p

Same thing happened with Mascara. Waterproof mascara covers eyelashes from ablution... so i guess we should clean it first before wudhu. I found it tiring, so I prefer not wearing mascara =_=

I tried this before.. Like u said, it is lightweight.. But I still dont think water can get to our nails that fast.. Not in a second..

Anyway, I like the texture.. :)

Perhaps you'd like to read this detailed analysis here: http://mustafaumar.com/2012/11/is-breathable-nail-polish-sufficient-for-wu%E1%B8%8Du/

Quoted from the article:

"UPDATE: 03-25-13: Inglot has conducted tests which may reveal that not only water vapor but even a droplet can permeate a single layer of O2M polish. The results are unofficial and will be finalized soon. In the meantime, here is some information which explains how and why the polish works: download here"

How amazing would that be, but sadly as you said before. You wouldn't be able to achieve a proper wudhu and as for the mascara I didn't know that. Thank you for sharing..

Hi hi! Would just like to say thank you for the research and sharing on Inglot's polishes. Will be sharing this entry on my facebook timeline.

It's very straightforward and simple to digest (which I love!). Look forward to reading more of such entries from you. :)

Salam Shea :) Just what to ask you is true that wearing henna is a sunnah.. Because my ustazah once told me that it is haram to wear it, unless u r married and have a permission from you husband.. I avoid on wearing it ever since my ustazah told me :(... Hope you could share the knowledge.. And it will be much better if there's an hadith saying about it.. Sorry if this could make you or others angry... FYI i really love your style.. U'r my inspiration..

Slm! @Zyralove It is true that henna is Sunnah for all times and in fact encouraged in Islam and by our beloved Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa salam) himself!
As for nail polish, I also think it's best to avoid it, since none of us know when we will pass away. Ghusl would obviously have to be made and then what would happen if we had nail polish on? The Ghusl might be incomplete and that's scary!

Ps. Simply adore your blue hi-lo dress! Is it worn here over an abaya?
